Cancer Genetics Module

Cancer is considered a genetic disease because it is caused by changes (mutations) to our genes that control the way our cells grow and divide. The changes that cause cancer can be inherited from our family through our parents. Inherited genetic mutations play a vital role in about 5-10% of all cancers. Mutations in specific genes are associated with more than 50 hereditary cancer syndromes as per latest research. These are disorders that predispose individuals to developing certain malignancies.

Genetic testing can tell whether a person with a family history of one of such syndromes has one of these mutations which may make him vulnerable to cancer.
